Forged Interior Stair Handrail With Scrolled Returns

Forged black interior stair handrail with scrolled return and vertical pickets at a finished landing

Project Overview

This interior handrail system follows the staircase from the lower floor to the upper landing, combining wall-mounted rail runs with freestanding guard sections at each return. The handrail terminates in scrolled lamb's-tongue ends, and the profiled rail sits on slender vertical pickets anchored to the treads and floor.

Design Considerations

Each return has to resolve the rail's profile, height, and scroll termination against the millwork and wall it meets — the transitions at the top and bottom of the stair are where the forging detail carries the design.
